"It's not that easy," an Air National GuardA-10C Thunderbolt II pilot told TheAviationist.com. "It has to be a pretty permissive environment for us to turn around and make guns. It doesn't happen much anymore."

The truth is that the A-10 is not the right aircraft for the conflict in Ukraine. In fact, it probably won't go well at all.

While it's true that the A-10 was originally designed specifically to engage Soviet gun ranges (although, as discussed below, it may not be as effective as you think), the low and slow. The Vertug has found popularity as the infantry's preferred close air support platform throughout two decades of asymmetric warfare in the Middle East. This was not the A-10's original purpose, but in many ways it proved more effective in providing air support to troops in contact than it could have been against the waves of Soviet weaponry pouring across Europe's borders.

In many ways, the global war on terror was the perfect opportunity for the A-10 to shine, as it pitted American forces against opposing forces without significant air power or advanced air defense capabilities. When operating within this permissive environment, the A-10's strengths are evident, but its weaknesses are less obvious. Man-portable air defense systems (MANPADS) are few and far between and those used by opposition forces are dated. Beyond that, the air defense systems were mostly absent in these conflicts.

"In a higher risk environment, many of the A-10's tactics would put the aircraft at high risk of being shot down. In fact, against very high quality air defenses, most current USAF and Navy aircraft would encounter great danger."

The airspace over Ukraine is still highly contested. While Ukrainian aircraft continue to fly combat sorties daily—which, in itself, seems almost miraculous in the face of Russia's superior technology and numbers—Russian fighter jets and air defense systems remain a large part of the conflict. And while Russian air defense systems may not be as invincible as they are often portrayed, they are certainly capable of engaging the visible, slow-flying warthog.

How An A 10's Depleted Uranium Rounds Turn Tank Armor Against Itself

As we've discussed before, the A-10 can actually hold its own against racial fighters in a one-on-one confrontation under the right circumstances, but trying to do so is more desperation than method. With a top speed of 420 miles per hour, the A-10 would be an easy target for the Russian S-300 or S-400 air defense system as well as various Russian fighter jets.

The A-10 "will not close our skies, they will not stop bombers and missiles," Yuri Sak, an adviser to Ukraine's defense minister, told Military.com. "They will be a target for Russian fighter jets and anti-aircraft defenses, because we have no way to effectively cover them, or penetrate defenses against enemy aircraft."

The A-10's legendary gun, the GAU-8 Avenger, is an incredible piece of engineering. At nearly 20 feet long and nearly 620 pounds, this self-propelled, seven-barreled Gatling-style cannon originally could fire 2,100 rounds per minute on the low setting and 4,200 rounds on the high setting, but later switched to a fixed 3,900 rounds per minute. minute at any time. In other words, the A-10's mighty weapon fires 65 rounds per second... and we're not talking about any rounds.

In 1979, the Naval Postgraduate School tested the effectiveness of the A-10 and its powerful gun against Soviet T-62 tanks using a low angle of attack. In what may come as a shock to some, they discovered that the Warthog was very ineffective against 1950s-era tanks when engaging from the front, but could deliver lethal blows when attacking from the rear or sides.

And at distances of only 4,400 feet to 1,587 feet, the A-10 fired a total of 957 rounds and actually hit the tanks with only 93.

Of course, sharp weapons are not always necessary for anti-tank combat. Doing enough damage to the undercarriage or tank surfaces to limit mobility, for example, can be just as important—and the A-10 did so in several passes. In fact, this test ultimately showed that the A-10 could take out T-62s at a rate of 0.43 kills per pass, or a little less than once every two times around the bend.

However, for context, it is important to understand that the T-62 had a 100mm thick frontal armor plating mounted at a steep angle to improve performance. As a result, it is said to offer the equivalent of 200mm of integrated homogeneous armour. On the sides and back, the T-62's armor thickness is mostly between 45 and 80 millimeters.

The most common Russian T-72s (known as the T-72B3), on the other hand, have 200 mm thick frontal armor made of layered enhanced materials that are also beveled for increased protection, said to be equivalent to 500 and 600 mm.
