children's health defense jobs

Children's Health Defense Jobs - No child in the richest nation on earth has to worry about where his next meal will come from or where he will have a place to sleep every night. Yet more than 12.8 million children in America – nearly 1 in 5 – live in poverty and face these harsh realities every day. More than 2 in 3 poor children are children of color, and our youngest children are our poorest. In New York City, nearly 1 in 5 children live in poverty, more than 3 in 10 black children live in poverty, and more than 14 percent of families struggle with food insecurity. It is clear that we are failing our children and our nation. Poverty reduces a child's chances of graduating from high school and increases his chances of becoming a poor adult. That child is more likely to suffer from illness and become entangled in the criminal justice system. In addition to the human costs, child poverty has enormous economic costs. Our nation loses an estimated $700 billion per year in productivity and child poverty resulting from rising health costs and crime.

Child poverty is an urgent and preventable crisis. The solutions to child poverty already exist in our nation if we just expand and invest in them. In 2015, the Children's Defense Fund released our groundbreaking report, End Child Poverty Now, which shows how America can immediately lift millions of children out of poverty by improving and investing in policies and programs that work. Four years later, the second edition of Ending Child Poverty Now (2019) updates our earlier study and presents another call for an urgent reduction in child poverty. We find it unacceptable and unfair that our leaders are still debating and the poor children are still waiting. How many more studies and reports will it take before our leaders admit we know what to do and can start now?

By investing an additional 1.4 percent of our federal budget in existing programs and policies, we could reduce child poverty by at least 57 percent nationally and 58 percent in New York, lift 5.5 million children out of poverty, and help 95 percent of poor children. . CDF has identified nine policy reforms that can be made immediately to increase employment, pay for work and meet children's basic survival needs of food, shelter and child support. CDF then commissioned the Urban Institute to assess the impacts and costs of these policy reforms on child poverty. According to the Urban Institute, these combined policy reforms could significantly reduce child poverty as measured by the Supplemental Poverty Measure (SPM), which captures the impact of government benefits and tax policy on households.

In the New York legislative session, there were several policy proposals that were not ultimately included in the final 2019 legislative budget, but reflected provisions discussed in the National Report on Ending Child Poverty. If passed, New York could keep more children out of poverty. These suggestions include:

The Children's Defense Fund is urging Congress to act now to implement the federal policy reforms outlined in the report to make significant progress toward ending child poverty for all children.

We can easily afford these investments, which will improve opportunities for millions of children and help restore the nearly $700 billion that our national economy loses each year from the effects of child poverty on productivity, public health, and crime. Let's act now to end child poverty in America. Congress can start by implementing the following federal policy reforms to lift 5.5 million children out of poverty:

Congress isn't the only place where action is needed. Many of these policies and programs have state and local counterparts that can develop without federal action. New York State, counties, cities and towns can serve as an example for our entire nation. New York is already on track to raise the minimum wage to $15.00. It is up to all of us—parents, grandparents, teachers, students, religious leaders, and advocates—to make the call to end child poverty so pervasive and overwhelming that it cannot be ignored. There is no excuse for inaction. Every community and individual concerned about the future of our children must stand up now to take action to end child poverty. Learn more about how you can take action. In a landmark decision filed on January 13, 2021, NYS Judge Gerard Neri said that the Covid-19 vaccine mandate for healthcare workers is now "null, void and of no effect." The court held that the NYS Department of Health lacked the authority to impose such a mandate because this authority was reserved to the state legislature. Additionally, the court found the order to be "arbitrary and capricious" because the Covid-19 vaccines do not stop transmission, undermining any rational basis for the order.
