The Geral Electric GAU-8/A Avger is a 30mm hydraulically driven sev-barrel Gatling-style autocannon first mounted on the Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II of the U.S. Air Force. Designed to destroy a wide range of ground targets, the Avger fires a powerful gun at a rapid rate of fire. The GAU-8/A is also used on the Gatekeeper CIWS anti-ship missile system, which defends against short-range threats such as high-powered missiles, aircraft and cruise ships. The standard ammunition mix for armor piercing is a five-to-one mix of PGU-14/B Armor Piercing Incdiary, project weight about 14.0 oz (395 g or 6,096 grains) and PGU-13/B High Explosive Incendiary (HEI) , the projectile weighs approximately 13.3 ounces (378 grams or 5,833 ounces).
