To encourage excellence in architectural design and library planning, the National Institute of American Architects (AIA) in Washington, DC and the American Library Association (ALA) established this award to recognize achievements in library architecture. . Every two years, representatives from each institution celebrate the best examples of library designs from around the world designed by American architects.
CALS Director Bobby Roberts' challenge was to create a playground without equipment, where nature and imagination combine to create grand adventures on six acres of natural sites in the heart of the capital. The chart with the children reveals a surprising and interesting result: their biggest desire is not for the latest video game… they are worried about food security – they want to learn how to feed themselves. Kids also want spaces that are uplifting, inspiring and full of natural light, while feeling safe and secure. They wanted a place to "raise expectations".
We worked diligently to design a library that would connect with the aspirations of all children and enliven an otherwise dormant environment, attracting people from all over Little Rock. At $40.00 per sf above the normal new library average, being recognized by Architects of America as one of only six best library designs in the world is a sign of the public's trust and continued investment in our community's most important asset. Public Library. We as architects are very proud to contribute to this belief. It's been an honor to work with audiences like the CALS leadership.
From the success of the library, which includes nearly 100,000 visitors, the release of 99,178 books and DVDs, 832 sessions for children, and 326 group sessions in 2014 alone, said Library Director Dr. Bobby Roberts,

"Building a children's library was a big step for us, because library systems usually treat these services as one department within a larger facility. In our case, one facility not only provides services but also brings attention to children in the community. It is is the perfect time to build the Hillary Rodham Clinton Children's Library; it has become a popular destination for children and parents in Central Arkansas." Winner of the 2015 National AIA/ALA Library Architecture Award, Polk Stanley Wilcox Architect design of the new Hillary Rodham Clinton Children's Library and Learning Center for the Central Arkansas Library System (CALS) is based on experiential learning, in which children's learning is done through hands on . Activities that teach life skills are essential for becoming a responsible adult. Called a “community-connected and supportive learning center,” the library offers not only books, but also activity rooms, teaching kitchens, greenhouses and vegetable gardens, and arboretums. The library system's challenge was to create an equipment-free playground, where nature and imagination can create grand adventures on a six-acre natural site in the heart of the capital. A chart saved with the kids reveals a surprising result: Their biggest desire isn't for the newest video game… They're worried about food security — they want to learn how to feed themselves. Kids also want spaces that are uplifting, inspiring and full of natural light, while feeling safe and protected. They wanted a place to "raise expectations". The site becomes a learning experience, emphasizing teaching hands-on skills, such as gardening and food preparation. The inspiration for the architecture is based on many Arkansas' childhood memories, growing up in a rural area where the playground was actually fields, creeks, utility structures such as barns, warehouses, and forts built with their own hands - a few inner-city children rarely made it. . Children's experiments go on a journey of their own… The library acts as a large room in the jungle: its roof soars into the sky as the site falls, protecting the space within while the site's restored ecosystem is open to view. Architecture talks about the sustainability and the technical nature of construction, showing all relationships and systems, like a child construction set. The building belongs to the teacher. The Children's Library received LEED Gold certification, as well as an American Architecture Award from the Chicago Athenaeum in 2014 and an AISC Ideas2 Award in 2016. The AIA Arkansas Honor Award-winning project was also voted by members as their favorite project for 2013. And was also awarded the AIA Gulf States Awards in 2017.
