Could This Drone Replace The A 10 Warthog?

The General Electric GAU-8/A Avenger is a seven-barreled 30mm hydraulically operated Gatling-style autocannon typically installed on the US Air Force's Fairchild Republic A-10 Warthog.

Designed specifically for the anti-tank role, the Avenger is 20 feet long and provides a very powerful round with a high rate of fire.

The Avenger's rate of fire is initially selectable, 2,100 rounds per minute (rpm) on low setting or 4,200 rpm on high setting. This is then converted to a fixed speed of 3900 rpm.

“Now there are other factors like the barrel turn time in the first half of the second, so you can get more time depending on how many shots you take.

“We never really worried about the barrel overheating, although we tried to keep our bullets in check. It's always better to run out of targets than to run out of ammo.

“Still, you see 9 to 18 passes before you get dry. Not too bad. And that's not counting all the other grooming packages hanging from the wings.

“This is a short video of how the receiving party uses high explosive incendiary ammunition. Note that this is shooting sniper targets, not point targets. So the bullets are scattered in a row and the run takes a little longer than usual to cover the target area.”

The GAU-8 Avenger is a formidable weapon system and the foundational A-10 Warthog, despite its age, is not lost. soon.

The Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt - also known as the "Warthog" - served in combat during the 1991 Gulf War - destroying more than 900 Iraqi tanks, about 2,000 other military vehicles, and about 1,200 pieces of artillery. The aircraft also reportedly shot down two Iraqi helicopters.

The aircraft was used in subsequent operations in Bosnia and Herzegovina during Operation Deliberate Force and later in Operation Allied Force; and has seen deployments in Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya. While the A-10 can be equipped with a variety of rockets, missiles and bombs, most of the destruction was caused by the aircraft's rotary cannon.

Development of the weapon began in the early 1970s, when the United States Air Force issued a request for proposals (RFP) for a 30mm rapid fire weapon for use with A-X Close Air Support aircraft. General Electric developed a prototype, which was named the GAU-8. In addition to the weapons, the government contract also called for the development of four types of ammunition for use with the cannon, and these included the Armor Piercing Incendiary, High-Explosive Incendiary, Semi-Armor Piercing High-Explosive, and Target Practice.

The weapon must be capable of destroying a wide range of targets encountered during air support missions, including light, medium and heavy tanks, as well as armored personnel carriers (APCs) and even fixed and mobile artillery. Additionally, military specifications required that the platform be capable of destroying fortified targets including bunkers.

GAU-08's first flight testing began in 1974 and was tested across a wide range of flight profiles, from 25,000 feet to 100 feet and from speeds from 155 mph to almost 480 mph and up to five Gs.

The seven-barreled Gatling style gun was originally designed to fire at a higher rate of 4,200 rounds per minute, but has since been reduced to the still very high rate of 1,800 rounds per minute. Each 30mm cartridge regurgitated by the GAU-08 is larger than a normal beer bottle, and two hydraulic motors are required to turn the keg, all of which rocks the craft and produces a blast of hot gas.

Why The A 10 Is Just Not The Right Jet For Ukraine

As Drive reports, there's even been a long-standing urban legend that the shots slow down planes. That's not the case, but actually the muzzle flash can blind pilots, while the gas can leave soot on the windshield. As a result, the window washing function was added to the A-10. Another problem is that the gas is devoid of oxygen and can flow into the wings and engines, causing suffocation.

The Air Force worked for more than a decade to fix the problem, and this included lengthening the barrel when the gas deflector was tested. However, Air Force engineers came up with a somewhat unique solution to overcome the concern that the engines would leak. The ammunition propellant mix was revised, but eventually the ignition system was changed. If gas from GAU-08 causes the aircraft's engine to stall, it will be restarted immediately. When the weapon is fired, the igniter lights up, reducing the chances of the fire going out.

In addition, because of the recoil of the weapon
