The A-10 was the first US it. Air Force aircraft specifically designed for close air support of ground forces. It is named after the famous P-47 Thunderbolt, a fighter often used in close air support roles during the latter part of World War II. A-10 is highly maneuverable at low speeds and low altitudes to ensure accurate delivery of weapons, and it carries the systems and armor necessary to survive in this environment. It is intended for use against all ground targets, but specifically tanks and other armored vehicles. Thunderbolt II's large arms give it a large combat radius and a long luther time in the war zone. The short takeoff and landing capacity allows operations from airfields close to the front line. Maintenance at advanced bases with limited facilities is possible due to the simple design of the A-10.

'The A-10 engine is a General Electric TF34, first generation turbofan. 'It's a great engine, though, and the perfect kind of engine for a Haw. IIRC, something like 80% of the thrust comes from the air bypass rather than what goes through the engine core. It is (relatively) quiet, runs cool, easy to maintain and very durable. However, being an old first generation motorcycle, the newer ones are better.'
'The improvement will not even require a new engine design. Back when I was flying hawks, we would pine for the same engine used in the Canadian jet biz. The General Electric CF34 (a direct descendant of the TF34) has roughly twice the thrust of the venerable TF34, with only about a 20% increase in fuel flow. The engine mounts need to be slightly increased, but the increased power will more than make up for it.
