In Corey DeFore's case, he switched roles from teacher to student when he entered the rigorous F-35 Lightning II training program he helped build.

DeFore's role as a contract instructor pilot is to teach US and international service members to fly the F-35. Now a student in the course he teaches, DeFore took to the skies in an F-35 for the first time in March, when he flew as a reservist with the 101st Fighter Wing at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida.
"Being in a pilot's shoes helps me inform the best way to simulate training missions, so to speak, to develop and refine Navy tactics."
DeFore had always wanted to be a pilot and had no backup plan for his career. He caught the flying bug at a young age listening to David's stories from his service flying the A-6. After college, DeFore spent a decade flying F-18s as a naval aviator flying on and off aircraft carriers for combat operations around the world.
After retiring from active duty, DeFore assumed his current role as a Navy Reservist and Lockheed Martin instructor pilot. When he arrived at the Integrated Training Center at Eglin Base in 2012, he was one of the F-35 instructors and the Navy squadron had not yet begun flying the aircraft.
How Can I Fly With The Blue Angels?
Fast forward four years and now more than 250 pilots and 2,500 maintainers from six countries have completed the F-35 training program under DeFore and his colleagues, and the number of students in training is at an all-time high.
As he progresses through the training program, DeFore said he is pursuing ideas to make the syllabus and instruction more effective.
"I take notes on opportunities I see to tighten up the training," says DeFore. "We receive feedback that the training program does a good job of preparing pilots to fly, and we want to continue to improve the experience."
To prepare for his first flight, DeFore pointed to simulator missions as an important factor. His instructors replaced the normal emergency flights of a full-mission simulator with new scenarios that threw him unexpected situations and made sure he was prepared.
Robotic Fighter Jets Could Soon Join Military Pilots On Combat Missions. Here's Why
DeFore said the Navy is focused on integrating the F-35 into its fleet and developing employment strategies, and that the goal of the training is to prepare pilots to make an immediate impact.
"As training continues to grow, the opportunity to take what pilots see in flight back to the instructor corps excites me," DeFore said. "Being in a pilot's shoes helps me inform the best way to simulate training missions, so to speak, to develop and refine Navy tactics."
"Being in the ready room again and training just reinforces my appreciation for the maintenance people who work on the planes and keep the pilots safe and all the people who work hard in the program every day. That's part of it."
DeFore said the training program reminded him that flying airplanes takes a lot of effort.

"On a Navy aircraft carrier, you have 5,000 people below the flight deck supporting the mission. From my perspective, anywhere you look in the F-35 program there is a unified purpose," DeFore said.
"Being in the ready room again and training just reinforces my appreciation for the maintenance people who work on the planes and keep the pilots safe and all the people who work hard in the program every day. It's part of this."
What's it like to fly a brand new fighter jet after four years of teaching how the systems work?
"It was amazing to finally get on the plane!" DeFore said. "I'm definitely ready and confident to jump into the F-35 for the first time. I'm excited to implement some small changes to better prepare future classes and further enhance the base pilots we get at the academy training center."
The First Jet Pilots
Kory DeFore was the first contractor instructor pilot, or CIP, to fly the F-35. For the F-35 program, the instructor team responsible for teaching new F-35 pilots academy and emergency procedures consists of retired military pilots with years of experience.
CIPs also provide instruction during full-mission simulator training missions, which account for about half of the initial qualification flights for the single-seat F-35 for affordability and training capability.
After the students are airborne for their training flights, a military F-35 pilot flies the chase plane and talks the student through instrument and configuration checks.
After qualifying, pilots work on tactics in a full mission simulator and fly monthly contingency missions with support from CIPs.

After Bitburg, the second base in Germany where the L-39 was available for flight was at Paderborn in the Ruhr region. You fly the original L-39 of the LSK (Luftstreitkräfte) of the NVA, the former DDR army.
Adventure's itinerary is similar to any other destination: upon arrival, your pilot will meet you and take you around the plane. Afterwards, you will be allowed into the briefing room where the flight plan will be discussed. This is your chance to express your wishes and tailor the flight to suit your needs. Below is flight safety training, flight systems briefing and cockpit training. When the pilot sees that you are ready for flight, you will be seated and strapped into the plane. The canopy closes and locks and you taxi to the track.
How Fast Do Fighter Jets Fly?
If you are near Paderborn or visiting Cologne, Düsseldorf, Duisburg, Essen or Bielefeld, this is the flight for you! Due to high fuel and maintenance costs, flights in Germany are more expensive than elsewhere, but travel time is not necessary if you are in the area.
Despite the short notice capability, we recommend booking your flight in advance to ensure your flight date is available.
The recommended flight date range is from March to October, as the days are longer and the weather is generally better than in winter.
We recommend a 20-minute flight. If you think you can handle it, you can still go on a second flight!
