Aug Assault Rifle - The Steyr AUG (Armee Universal Gewehr, pronounced "Army Universal Rifle") is a family of Austrian bullpup automatic weapons designed by Hannes Kepplinger, Horst Wesp, Karl Wagner and Karl Möser in 1974.
And has been manufactured by Steyr Arms since 1978. The designation "AUG" is often used to designate a specific version, usually the original AUG A1 with a polymer plastic receiver and integrated Swarovski Optik optics. The AUG was adopted by the Austrian Armed Forces as the StG 77 in 1978 and is their service rifle.

The AUG was originally designed by Hannes Kepplinger, Horst Wesp, Karl Wagner and Karl Möser in 1974 and its design was finalized around 1977. The standard version of the gun was introduced in 1977 and was available with a green or black polymer stock. It was adopted by the Austrian Army in 1978 as StG 77,

Which replaced the older 7.62mm StG 58, which was the FN FAL produced under Austrian license. It has been in production since 1978, remaining the standard small arms of the Austrian Bundesheer and various police units, and has since spawned a number of related weapons and numerous derivatives. The weapon has since been adopted by several other armed forces around the world and is now manufactured under license in several countries.
The Steyr AUG is a gas family of firearms that fire from a sealed cartridge; it is designed as a modular weapon system that can be configured as an assault rifle, machine gun, carbine, compact carbine, or squad automatic weapon, while retaining a large number of common parts between each of its variants. The gun is mainly made of aluminum and polymer components.
The AUG has a seven-point rotating bolt that is opened by a pin on the bolt housing and a folding glass guide built into the bolt carrier; the bearing is controlled by double guide rails which are moved through the bearing. Both rods pass through steel bearings in the receiver. The control shafts also have recoil springs for the arms.
The gun has a "bump" type muzzle and spring; the director also acts as the eighth closing pipe.

The gun's gas piston is loaded on the right side of the barrel; it serves a dual purpose, working with one of the two control rods. The gas piston has a three-position adjustment: one for normal operation, marked with a small dot, one for "dirty" conditions, marked with a larger dot, and a third, marked "GR", for rifle throw is used. bombs The gun's left guide rail can also act as a lever to remove exhaust gases in addition to cocking handle pressure when connected to the gun's forward assist.
The gun is hammer fired, the fire control group is on the back of the gun; it is protected by a shoulder plate made of synthetic rubber. The fire control assembly is primarily made of plastic, except for the springs and screws used to hold the fire control assembly in its housing.
When the gun is fired, the surface of the bullet resets the hammer during recoil, contacts the surface of the bolt and resets the hammer.
The AUG uses a multi-stage "pull-through" system; pulling the trigger halfway causes the gun to fire semi-automatically, while pulling it all the way causes it to fire fully automatically. The gun has a three-position safety located above the handle.

Some versions of the AUG, notably the Irish and Australian versions, have an "automatic lock"; it is a small protrusion located below the trigger of the gun. This advance prevents the weapon from firing fully automatically, by preventing the trigger from being fully pulled; this block can be stored so that the AUG can fire fully automatically if necessary.
The optic also has a primary reticle designed so that at 300 m (980 ft) a 180 cm (5.9 ft) target fills it completely, giving its user an accurate range estimation method. There is a set of spare sights on the optic. The optic itself cannot be set to a specific range, but can be adjusted for load and elevation.
AUG barrels are cold hammer made by the company Steyr GFM-GmbH, some parts of the gas system are chrome or nitrided. Barrels are mainly made with three-dimensional open-flap covers; HBAR versions use a closed-port banana device. Weapons are mostly made by hand.
The gun carriage is made of steel-reinforced aluminum, while the gun stock is made of fiberglass-reinforced polyamide 66.

The gun's loading handle is on the left side of the rifle and has a forward assist that helps hold the bolt without recoiling the rifle.
However, only the AUG A3 has a trigger release button; All previous versions of the AUG required the user to pull the charging handle to engage the bolt. The gun isn't completely ambidextrous, but at least it can be configured for left- or right-handed use by changing the stock and charging handle and placing the catch plate over the unused ejection port. There is a special hardware-only component that allows the AUG A1 and A2 to accept STANAG magazines called the NATO Conversion Kit.
An improved version introduced in 1982. Available in olive or black polymer trays. Approved as StG 77. There are versions:
Advanced version with redesigned charging handle and Picatinny rail. The folding hand can be replaced with a Picatinny rail.

An improved version with a Picatinny rail on the top of the receiver and an external bolt release button. It was introduced in 2004. There are versions:
Heavy automatic rifle. A variant of the AUG is intended to serve as a squad automatic weapon. Instead of the 1.5× optics of the regular versions, there is a 4× Swarovski Optik telescopic sight. There are options:
It has a completely different barrel, bolt and magazine and uses recoil instead of gas operation. In 9×19mm Parabellum, not 5.56mm.
The Australian version is produced by Thales Australia. Can be fitted with the ML40AUS GLA grenade launcher. Adopted in Australia and New Zealand, the latter named it the IW Steyr (Infantry Weapon);

An upgraded version of the AUG A1 used by the Irish Defense Forces. Usually equipped with 4× ACOG optics.
A semi-automatic version of the AUG A1 designed specifically for the US market. Then in 1989 the import was banned.
A semi-automatic version of the AUG, developed by Tony Marfione and manufactured by Microtech Small Arms Research, a Microtech Knives company. Includes an AR neck rest. It was suspended due to the closure of MSAR in 2015.
An Australian modular prototype has been developed in collaboration with DSTO, Tenix Defense Systems and Metal Storm. The development is funded by the Australian government.
